MTA to hold public meeting on new train linking Brooklyn, Queens
The MTA will hold a virtual public town hall next month to discuss its plans for an Interborough Express train, which would create a much desired link between Brooklyn and Queens.
MTA experts will give members of the public a general overview of the project and an opportunity to ask questions at the meeting on May 19.
Using existing land alongside existing freight railroad tracks, the project would be built along an underused rail that connects the two boroughs composed of two parts - the MTA-owned Bay Ridge Connector freight line and CSX-owned Fremont Secondary, a 14-mile freight line that extends from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Jackson Heights, Queens.
The project would create a new transit option for the almost 900,000 residents of the neighborhoods along the route, along with 260,000 people who work along the corridor in the two boroughs.
The Interborough Express would also connect with up to 17 different subway lines as well as the Long Island Rail Road, with end-to-end travel times expected to be around 40 minutes.
Projected initial ridership is expected to be anywhere from 74,000 to 88,000 weekday riders, the MTA says.
For more information on the project and the public meeting, you can visit the project's website.
