A 100-year-old church in Ditmas Park is now a pile of rubble, leaving neighbors outraged as to why it was not given landmark status by the city.

Community advocates Anthony Beckford and Harry Bubbins say they are representing many who feel the city let them down by allowing the Baptist Church of the Redeemer on Cortelyou Road to be demolished. They say the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission should have protected the church.

"Unfortunately the LPC refused to act on the community's request to at least have a hearing on the architectural merits of this building," says Bubbins.

The city's Landmark Preservation Commission tells News 12 it did receive a request to evaluate the Baptist church in March. The commission says the church, which was designed by architect Frank J. Helmle, lacked the architectural excellence and detailing seen in his other designs.

Advocates say the developer of the property where the church once stood plans to construct a 9-story affordable housing building. Some of the ground floor will be dedicated to the church.
