An 83-year-old woman who was fatally struck by a truck driver last Wednesday was mourned by members of the Gowanus community and loved ones on Monday.
The woman, Carolyn J. Cox, was known by many in her community as Ms. Joy.
They came together on Monday night at the intersection where she was struck - Butler and Bond streets - to mourn the tragic loss.
Police say Cox was crossing the street last Wednesday morning when a truck ran her over on Butler Street.
That driver continued on for nearly 10 blocks before coming to a stop.
In a statement to News 12, the Department of Transportation says, in part:
“We are exploring potential immediate safety upgrades at the location, and we’re adding daylighting to a record 1,000 intersections this year to improve visibility for everyone on the road.”
Police say that no arrests have been made.
