To show support for breast cancer awareness, football players at all levels wear pink, but one local football team has chosen to do something different.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, New Utrecht High School football player Kadeen Dryden and head coach Alan Balkan decided to raise money for breast cancer by not wearing pink.
Dryden says he lost his grandmother to breast cancer two years ago, and it was one of the toughest times in his life. He says he came up with the idea for people to save the money they were going to spend on pink clothing, and donate it to be put toward breast cancer awareness instead.
Balkan says he and fellow coaches supported the students' money-raising idea, and decided to double whatever amount of money they raised and donate it.
Both the New Utrecht varsity and JV teams raised $726 for The American Cancer Society.
In addition, to the over $700 donation from the football program, New Utrecht High School raised close to $2,100 selling bracelets and pins.
