New Yorkers took the streets in bridal gowns on Tuesday for the 23rd annual Gladys Ricart and Victims of Domestic Violence Memorial Walk.
On Sept. 26, 1999, Gladys Ricart was killed on her wedding day. Ricart's ex-boyfriend brutally murdered her in front of her family nearly 25 years ago. Her niece, Lethy Liriano, was among the hundreds in the crowd on Tuesday, chanting and holding Ricart's photo up high.
"We stand to raise awareness, our family didn't know maybe how to help my aunt at that time, because we didn't understand that domestic violence isn't sometimes obvious visibly. Sometimes you don't know that a person is hurting the one you love," said Liriano.
Just down the street, along the Grand Concourse, the crowd also held a moment of silence for late NYPD Officer Ariana Reyes Gomez. Gomez was stabbed to death by her estranged husband inside of her Bronx apartment last year.
