Nine families are now Brooklyn homeowners thanks to the city's plan to build affordable housing. Formerly empty lots on Glenmore Avenue in East New York are now home to the Glenmore Garden Development. Each of the five buildings consists of two two-family homes with large kitchens, bathrooms, balconies and parking. The families were chosen through a Department of Housing lottery and must maintain ownership for 15 years before they sell. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) says the completion of Glenmore Gardens is a milestone for the city. Officials have now completed more than a third of the 160,000 affordable housing units they want to build citywide.
