New Jersey Transit is preparing to roll out new multilevel rail cars.
The self-propelled rail cars are the first of their kind in North America. NJ Transit officials say it will provide increased reliability and new customer amenities, such as USB charging and onboard information screens.
"NJ Transit has invested more than $950 million to purchase 174 of these multilevel rail cars, with approximately $270 million funded with state dollars…and $680 million funded by the federal government from the [Federal Transit Administration], which includes the 25 additional rail cars funded as part of the Portal North Bridge Project,” said NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett.
Corbett says the new rail cars will start operating by the middle of 2025.
