Family and friends were joined by New York's finest to remember two Brooklyn detectives killed in the line of duty four years ago today.
Today marks four years since detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot and killed as they sat in their patrol car in Bed-Stuy.
Detectives Liu and Ramos were both assigned to the 84th Precinct, but were working in the confines of the 79.
On Dec. 20, 2014, the two were sitting in their patrol car near the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins avenues when they were ambushed.
According to investigators, the gunman walked up to the passenger side window and shot directly into the car killing both officers before they even had a chance to draw their own weapons. He then ran down the street to a subway station where police say he killed himself.
It was five days before Christmas, and the two officers were nearing the end of their shift.
In the days following the shooting, a massive memorial grew at that intersection with officers from around the country coming to show their support. About a year later, the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation was set up to keep their memories alive.
On last year's anniversary, the foundation held a toy drive, giving gifts to children at a local school near where the officers were killed. A similar event will also be held this year.
The foundation has held numerous backpack drives at the school around the corner from where the two officers were shot as well.
