NYPD increase presence in 3 transit districts
A few New York City transit districts are due to see an increased NYPD presence as the department continues to roll out their neighborhood policing approach.
The NYPD says transit districts 34 in Brooklyn, 23 in Queens and 11 in the Bronx are the latest to see the rollout that aims to reduce crime through trust and collaboration with the community.
The NYPD and MTA announced the expansion Thursday at the Transit Museum. They say last year there were about 2,500 crimes in the subway system, a significant drops from 30 years ago, when ridership was much lower.
In Brooklyn, the expansion would affect subway lines primarily serving southern Brooklyn, including the B, D, F, N, Q and R.
Though they say crime is down, NYPD officials say fare evasion spiked this year, up 68% from last year.
