The NYPD says a second man shot during a domestic dispute Monday night was accidentally killed by police gunfire.
Police found Francisco Carvajal at his ex-girlfriend Kathy Russo's Midwood apartment Monday night, armed with a knife. Officers at the scene say he refused to drop the weapon so they opened fire and killed him.
Another man, Rafael Laureano, was also at Russo's apartment. Laureano was unarmed and had been called by Russo to come help her. Police say Laureano was shot once in the back when he tried to rush past the responding officers and confront Carvajal. Initial reports said Laureano had been stabbed, but the medical examiner discovered no stab wounds on him.
Russo and her two children hid in the bathroom during the dispute and were not hurt.
Carvajal's son says the two men were friends, but Carvajal was jealous after discovering texts between Russo and Laureano. He says he wants to know why the police killed his father and is hoping the NYPD's internal investigation shows what really happened.
Laureano's friends say he died a hero and was just trying to help his friend.
