NYPD says new campaign has lowered crime citywide; some New Yorkers don’t buy it

Operation Fare Play was created to bring hundreds of officers into the city’s subway system – and the NYPD says it’s working.
According to the NYPD, the campaign was launched a few weeks ago – they sent 800 officers to join others underground in strategic locations that were decided based on crime rates, community complaints, and MTA statistics.
Police say there’s been an almost 80% jump in fare evasion arrests, and that between April 8 and April 12, there have been 175 fare arrests and 724 summonses issued.
According to the NYPD, the city has seen an overall decline in crime both above and below ground.
Canarsie commuters tell News 12 that they’ve still spotted people hopping the L train turnstiles regularly and have never heard of Operation Fare Play. Some riders did say that they feel better knowing that officers are present and available to assist during their commutes.
