NYPD: Search for person in the water near Coney Island boardwalk unsuccessful

Nearby beachgoers tell News 12 that they spotted a man jumping from the pier.

Divers from the NYPD and FDNY were unable to find a person who was spotted in the water by Steeplechase Pier along the Coney Island boardwalk on Wednesday.
According to the FDNY, the person was spotted in the water just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
The NYPD says that the person who went into the water was a male. News 12 spotted up to six divers at the scene searching for the person in the water.
Police say that multiple witnesses observed him jumped off of the pier and that they were unable to locate the body. They say that search efforts will continue on Thursday at 9 a.m.
Beaches are currently closed until Memorial Day weekend, and swimming is not allowed when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections of NYC Parks beaches.
