Parents are demanding the Department of Education move the Young Women's Leadership School into a permanent home after operating out of trailers.

The girls' school has operated out of a network of trailers at 2060 Lafayette Ave. for two years. The school first opened within P.S. 182, but was squeezed out two years later due to space issues.Students say they're learning without essentials, such as a nurse, library, cafeteria or auditorium. They also complain that they often have to bundle up to brave snow and rain just to travel between classes.

"I don't feel like I'm in a high school because we don't have a building," says a student.

"It's a challenge to juggle the space," says teacher Jennifer Vaccarella. "We work with what we have, but it's pretty uncomfortable. We're overcrowded."

The DOE has offered to move the school, which currently serves grades seven through 10, into a building. However, parents say the area is not safe and it's not even in the same school district.

Parents plan to hold a meeting on the issue Feb. 12 at the school. They've invited local elected officials.
