A 75-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV in Parkchester on Monday – an incident captured in exclusive video obtained by News 12.
Wahid Miah was crossing the street when a white SUV making a left turn from Wood Avenue onto White Plains Road struck him.
News 12 spoke with his friend who can’t believe he’s gone.
“The accident is so terrible,” said Shameem Ahmed, Miah’s neighbor. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”
The video shows Miah putting his hands out, telling the driver to stop, before he was run over.
“The community is really shocked, and last night, we went to his house to say sympathy to his family and all community people,” said Ahmed.
Miah came from Bangladesh less than 10 years ago. He was well known within the Parkchester Islamic community. His neighbor tells News 12 that Miah had just finished praying at the mosque. It was routine for him to walk back home for lunch around this time. But he did not make it back home on Monday.
The driver of the white SUV stayed on the scene after hitting Miah. Police say that driver has not yet been charged.
