Two weeks after a fire destroyed several businesses on Southern Boulevard, including a neighborhood pet store, the League of Humane Voters is pushing for legislation.
If ratified, the legislation that was introduced 10 years ago would call on all pet shops and animal centers to have emergency sprinkler systems installed throughout their buildings.
However, pet store owners claim that during the tough economic times, they would not be able to afford it.
?[It] sounds like a good idea, but where would the money come from?? says Cross Bronx Pet Shop owner Anthony Milazzo. ?From what I understand, it's very expensive. I could never afford that.?
