A cyclist was struck in Gowanus late Sunday night, according to officials.
Police tell News 12 that the driver stayed at the scene after the victim, a 62-year-old man, was struck and critically injured.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Third Avenue and 12th Street.
Police say the man was riding his electric bike on the sidewalk of Third Avenue headed northbound, got to the intersection of 12th Street and crossed into the roadway. At the same time, investigators tell News 12 that a 32-year-old man in a 1996 Mack dump truck was headed southbound on Third Avenue and was trying to make a left turn on to 12th Street when he struck the cyclist.
At the particular location, there are bike lanes but the cyclist was on the sidewalk. However, one avenue over, Fourth Avenue is included as part of the city's Green Wave Initiative. The goal is to install protected bike lanes from First Street to 60th Street by the end of the year.
City officials say there's been at least 17 cyclists killed since the start of the year, compared to 10 in all of 2018.
They say since 2014 more than 60% of fatalities happened at intersections with more than 20% when drivers were making turns.

The investigation is ongoing.
