The Yonkers Police Department is investigating vandalism found at the Hugh Redmond Memorial Park.

Officials say trespassers tore up Cook Field over the Memorial Day weekend using ATVs and dirt bikes.

Bikers who ride along paths that cross through the park say it's common to see people on electric bikes and scooters.

"It's a danger to pedestrians and you know, they go too fast. They speed," said John Condon, who lives in Hastings-on-Hudson but bikes through Yonkers daily.

Police believe the damage is significant enough to delay the park's reopening.

The park, located on Cook Avenue, has been closed to the public since August 2021 when the city's Parks Department announced a $6 million investment to improve neighborhood green spaces.

Renovations included improvements to the park's drainage systems, upgrades to the electrical services and construction to build new soccer, baseball and softball fields.

Work was originally scheduled to wrap up last August but has since lingered.

People who use the bike paths that run through the park are upset.

"We love green spaces everywhere, not just in Yonkers. We just think that people should be respectful of it," said Vira Vermann, who lives in the Bronx but bikes along the path that runs through Redmond Park.

Police are investigating this as a felony act of criminal mischief.
