Bait stations are being set up around New York City to vaccinate raccoons against rabies.
The New York City Health Department says nine rabid raccoons were found in the past year in the city. Three have been found in Brooklyn since April, including one as recent as last month in Bensonhurst.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Cornell University have set up bait stations in parks throughout the city to catch and vaccinate raccoons against rabies.
Dr. Edward Chapnick from Maimonides Medical Center says residents should call the Health Department at 311 if they see a raccoon out during the daytime. If left untreated, Chapnick says rabies can be fatal.
