A solemn ceremony was held at Fort Hamilton to remember the bravery and sacrifice of Lt. Andrew Doyle.
Doyle disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while flying a combat mission in 1944 during World War II.
Ann Byrne, Doyle's sister, received her brother's Purple Hearts that were stolen during a burglary a year ago.
The family reached out to Rep. Dan Donovan for help in getting the service medals returned.
At the Brooklyn War Memorial in Cadman Plaza Park, volunteers picked up leaves and planted daffodils
Veteran groups like Mission Continues, as well as other volunteers, teamed up with Cadman Park Conservancy and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.
The groups hope to bring awareness to the thousands of men and women from Brooklyn who served during World War II.
Organizers say the names of nearly 12,000 Brooklyn residents who died during WWII are etched inside the Brooklyn War Memorial.
The Cadman Park Conservancy is working to restore the memorial and open the inside to the public.
