Residents in Mill Basin are picking up the pieces after a fire destroyed two homes on National Drive.
The fire started at 2218 National Drive Monday afternoon. The fire chief says the flames quickly spread to three other homes due to the strong winds and the homes being close together.
After fighting the blaze from both the street and the icy water, firefighters were able to get the flames under control in 2 1/2 hours. Two homes were destroyed and several others were damaged. At least six firefighters were taken to Kings County Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.
A family who rented one of the homes that was damaged in the blaze says that they are just grateful that things weren't worse.
News 12 is told that at least two of the homes damaged in the fire will most likely be knocked down.
