Elected officials and concerned tenants rallied in Crown Heights Sunday after learning that their rent-stabilized building is being converted to market-rate value.
The rally against Alma Realty was held at the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn. Protesters say the landlord is converting nearly 700 rent-stabilized apartments to market-rate value.
Residents say they can't afford the new rates and say working families will be pushed out of the units.
Elected officials claim Alma Realty never completed an application that would require their units to be rent-stabilized, so the Department of Housing Preservation and Development withdrew Alma Realty's application.
Tenants are wondering whether it was done on purpose, and are vowing to fight the deregulation.
To resolve the issue, Borough President Eric Adams says a meeting between Alma Realty and HPD is in the works.
