September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. It also creates abnormally shaped cells that can block blood flow.
There is no known cure for Sickle Cell disease.
The Sickle Cell/Thalassemia Patients Network, based in Crown Heights, will be working this month to spread awareness. They will be hosting their annual walk on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Central Park.
