Stepfather charged with murder in toddler's death

The stepfather of a 3-year-old girl beaten to death in Bushwick has now been charged with second-degree murder. 
According to authorities, Jeida Torres was found with injuries to her head and chest Saturday while 20-year-old Kelsey Smith was watching her and her 5-year-old brother. It happened inside a Cooper Street homeless shelter where the family was staying. 
Police say the girl's brother told them that Smith kicked Jeida and banged her head against a bed frame after she soiled her diaper. The boy was also injured and taken to the hospital. 
Smith has additionally been charged with manslaughter after originally only facing charges for assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17 years old.
