Some local students say their dreams of becoming registered nurses were crushed Wednesday when they were told their scholarships would be terminated.

Students attending nursing school sponsored by the Health and Hospitals Corporation say they were summoned to a meeting Wednesday and told their funding would be cut. According to Joycelyn Lewis, one of the students, the group of prospective nurses was recruited by the company into a four-year program that included paid tuition and classroom costs.

Officials from the HHC say the nursing program, which is partially taught at Lehman College, was not canceled. Students involved say the lack of funding could cut their time in the program short.

Some of the students say they are considering legal action against the HHC if the program or their funding is eliminated.
