As a memorial grows for a beloved Brooklyn teacher who was killed in a hit-and-run Tuesday, the identity of the driver who hit him remains a mystery.
Matthew Jensen was a comforting and friendly presence for students at P.S. 110, where he taught.
"He made really funny jokes and I remember him wearing soccer jerseys all the time," said Ira, an 8-year-old student. She says she last saw Mr. Jensen on Saturday.
Jensen was hit by a Rolls Royce while crossing the street and was found with severe injuries on Bayard Street and McGuinness Boulevard. The driver did not stop. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Jensen was 58.
Neighbors say they hope the driver is caught and faces the crime.
In a statement, the principal of P.S. 110 said, "We would like to offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Jensen's family, colleagues, students, and the entire school community who are impacted by this tragedy."
The Department of Education says the school activated its crisis response team, and counselors are available.
The families affected in the community say paying their respects and thanking their teacher with flowers and notes are also one of their ways to cope.
