Community members and residents in Sunset Park say they have needed a new high school for decades.
Residents say with their growing youth population a new high school on 34 Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue would be ideal. They were relying on billions of dollars from the state. However, that money never came. As a result of a lawsuit, the Supreme Court decided the state wasn?t living up to its obligation to fund education in NYC as per the state's constitution.
The state has not yet decided how to provide the money that they owe the city. According to published reports, one option is an increase in state property taxes.
