A Brooklyn teacher from Long Island is accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old female student.
Police say 29-year-old Daniel Santiago worked at the Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy in Flatbush. He was arrested Monday on charges that include sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to court documents, Santiago had been abusing the girl since February and was sexting with the child.
Santiago is accused of acting inappropriately and touching the child on three separate occasions since February -- once on a bus for a school trip and two other incidents inside a classroom.
The alleged incidents were brought to the attention of the 11-year-old's cousin, who notified police after seeing apparent sexting messages.
Santiago posted $75,000 bail after his arraignment Tuesday and was ordered to stay away from the alleged victim.
No one answered the door at Santiago's North Baldwin apartment. Neighbors say he has two children, including an infant.
The city's Department of Education released a statement saying: "This teacher was immediately reassigned away from the classroom when we were made aware of this disturbing allegation. We'll seek to remove him from payroll as quickly as possible while the investigation is pending."
