Loved ones came together to release balloons in honor of 18-year-old mentor, who was shot and killed on Sunday.

Quahmir Cruz worked two jobs, including mentoring kids in Brownsville. Ralitsa Vos, program director of the Van Dyke Community Center, says Cruz was on a bright path.

“He knew there were a bunch of stereotypes and stigmas about the area he was in and he didn't want to fall under that. He didn't want to be categorized with that," said Vos.

Vos also says he took part in shooting response efforts. Until he became the victim of one.

Investigators say the shooting happened in the vicinity of 375 Blake Ave.

Cruz was taken to the hospital and later died.

The location of the shooting is just steps away from where Cruz lived and served at the community center. It happened just after 3 p.m. on Mother's Day.

“They took my son from me. That’s something that I will never, ever be able to get back. I love my son, Quahmir Cruz. I love you," said Cruz's mother, Danielle Cruz.

Police say no arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening.
