Today marks the start of the third and final stage of the G-train shutdown, which will impact commuters until Labor Day. During this time, the MTA says G trains will not run between the Bedford-Nostrand Avenue station and the Church Avenue station.
The MTA has arranged for free B-93 shuttle buses to operate between the Bedford-Nostrand Avenue and Hoyt-Schermerhorn stations. Passengers can then transfer to the F train at Hoyt-Schermerhorn to continue their journey between Bergen Street and Church Avenue.
This phase follows the completion of the second phase. This means G-train service is now restored between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue.
The ongoing work aims to modernize the signal system along the G line.
The service adjustments will remain in effect through 5 a.m. on Sept. 3.
Phase three comes as some people living in Greenpoint are petitioning to make an alteration put in place during phase two permanent.
In late June, the DOT closed the Bedford slip to traffic to help facilitate G-train shuttle buses. This allowed the area on the corner of Bedford Avenue and Nassau Avenue to be used as a pedestrian plaza.
Now that phase two is complete, the plaza is expected to reopen to vehicle traffic today.
Thousands of people have instead signed a petition to make the plaza permanent. Supporters say this would reduce crashes and provide needed public open space.
The petition has already received support from elected officials who say residents have been pushing for a plaza since 2021, long before the G-train shutdown went into place.
