City health officials say tuberculosis (TB) cases are lower than they have been for some time, but Brooklyn residents are still particularly susceptible.
Figures show less than 1,000 people contracted TB citywide over the last year. However, 13 out of 100,000 Brooklyn residents will likely get TB compared to 12 out of 100,000 in the rest of the city. Officials say the discrepancy is due to Brooklyn?s high immigrant population, which is four times more likely to contract the disease.
Tuberculosis is a respiratory illness that is spread by coughing and sneezing.
