Unemployment rates rose in the Bronx and throughout New York City in May, according to a report by the Department of Labor.

The figures show that the Bronx has the highest unemployment rate out of all the five boroughs, standing at 6.5 percent - up from 6.3 percent in May of 2007. This statistic translates into 33,000 residents who don?t have a job.

Citywide, more than 185,000 people were unemployed in May. The city?s unemployment rate had risen by 0.1 percent from 2007 to 2008, which is an increase of about 8,000 in the number of jobless New Yorkers.

The Department of Labor attributes this downturn in employment rates to the deteriorating labor market throughout the United States.
