Yonkers residents gathered for the second annual Unity Hill Barbeque Saturday, which was an event dedicated to ending gun violence in the city.

Last April, the community was shaken by the news of a Yonkers police detective being shot and wounded during a gun investigation at Elm and Linden Street.

The detective survived, two illegal guns were recovered and an FBI agent fatally shot the gunman on the scene. Since then, there have been additional shootings in the area.

The community hopes that incidents like these will someday become a thing of the past.

"For any community members that have been staying at home, because they're afraid, I hope it will show that there is support and that the city is thinking about them,” said Corazon Pineda-Isaac of the Yonkers City Council.

Residents said they are determined to take back their streets and not let acts of gun violence define their neighborhood.

Public service agencies that offered everything from scholarships to mental health counseling also supported those who attended the event.
