Bronx EMT Yadira Arroyo's family and members of the FDNY held a vigil Thursday to mark the sixth anniversary of her death.
The memory of Arroyo has been kept alive in the Bronx since her death - from a playground being renamed after her to a "Forever in Hearts" mural. Her family says even after all these years, living without her hasn’t gotten easier.
Arroyo was an EMT for 14 years and was described as the matriarch of Station 26 where she worked.
Her family says she was a single mom of five children who others could always go to for a shoulder to cry on or for a listening ear.
Jose Gonzalez was convicted of hijacking her ambulance and running her over with it. Gonzalez was found guilty of first-degree murder earlier this month and will be sentenced on April 5.
Arroyo’s family says that although time and a guilty verdict have helped them begin healing, nothing will ever bring Arroyo back.
The vigil took place outside of 1078 White Plains Road, the same location where Yadira Arroyo died.
