A young minke whale was seen swimming near the Verrazano Bridge Thursday after apparently losing its way.
Terri Frady, of the Noah Fishery Service, says that experts checked the 20-foot whale for injuries and signs of unusual behavior, as well as the mammal's surroundings.
The Coast Guard says it has chosen to not direct the whale to deeper waters, but is staying at a distance to set up safety zones with their boats, which is helping the whale travel safely.
A spokesperson from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the whale appears to be headed toward the Atlantic Ocean.
