A construction worker fell to his death Friday inside the former Domino Sugar factory in Williamsburg.
The worker, identified as 59-year-old Wilfredo Enriques, fell from the sixth floor down to the fourth floor at the 325 Kent Ave. building around 8 a.m. Two Trees Management Company, which manages the building, says the worker was installing a facade at the time.
He was transported to Woodhull Medical Center with head trauma and was later pronounced dead. A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
Two Trees Management Company tells News 12 Brooklyn in a statement, "We are overwhelmed with grief of this tragic accident and extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and colleagues. All work has stopped on the site and we are working closely with the city to determine the cause of the accident."
The old Domino Sugar factory is being converted into affordable housing. The city's Department of Buildings says the site has had dozens of complaints against it. The most recent ones include issues about scaffolding and no overhead protection.
Fellow construction worker John Lester says that it is an especially dangerous job because workers are not harnessed in.
News 12 reached out to the safety administration overseeing city workers, which says an investigation into the numerous complaints against the building is ongoing.
An industry trade group says there have been 29 deaths at construction sites in the city in the past two years.
