After nearly 24 months without a contract, workers at two Brooklyn nursing homes are demanding changes from their employer. Most workers at the Marcus Garvey Nursing Home in Crown Heights, and its sister location, Ruby Weston Manor, are members of Local 1199. Workers say they have not seen a wage increase since April of 2005. They also claim their employer is more than $500,000 in default when it comes to paying into workers? health benefits. Management officials at Marcus Garvey say Local 1199 is mostly to blame for workers being without a contract. They say the cost of employee health benefits has risen significantly over the last few years and will continue to increase. They're hoping the union will work with them to address the problem.
