Officials believe smoking in bed led to a fire that injured 15 people in Bensonhurst, including more than a dozen firefighters dispatched to fight the blaze.
The two-alarm fire at 2420 20th Ave. injured two civilians and 13 firefighters Thursday. According to FDNY officials, all of the injuries sustained were minor.
The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m., after many residents had gone to bed. Residents say they went from door to door to wake each other in what they described as a panicked scene.
At least four apartments in the building were left uninhabitable. Others suffered smoke and water damage. The building's superintendent says he is preparing to initiate cleanup of the damage.
