The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is investigating the death of a man shot by an NYPD officer in Brownsville.

Officers were responding to a homicide scene outside an apartment building on Thomas S. Boyland Street early Monday morning.

DaShawn Larode, 25, allegedly opened his first-floor apartment door and fired a shotgun at police. NYPD officer Sharjeel Warris returned fire, striking Larode.

The 25-year-old officer was grazed in the face by a bullet and is expected to make a full recovery.

News 12 spoke with Larode’s family before he was publicly identified by police.

“He was a great person with a genuine heart and yeah, I think that he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said his sister Dashawna.

The shooting was captured on police body-worn cameras. The video has not been released.

OSI investigates all police-civilian involved deaths.
