A Bronx educator who received national recognition for his teaching methods has been registered as a sex offender. Raemon Matthews, who used to teach at Samuel Gompers High School in Mott Haven, pleaded guilty in March and was sentenced to a year's probation in June. He forcibly touched a student's breast, buttocks and private parts, according to a criminal complaint. Matthews was a double recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award, leading many of his students to express shock over his conviction. Matthews resigned in April and the Department of Education has barred him from working in any classroom across the city.
