Brooklyn health officials have started a yearlong campaign to battle rising high blood pressure rates in the borough.
?Cut The Salt, Brooklyn? will feature events such as low-salt cooking classes in an effort to combat the health issue.
The Brooklyn Health Department says one in three Brooklyn residents is living with high blood pressure. Brooklyn minorities are at the greatest risk, with rates of more than 30 percent.
Experts suggest keeping an eye on nutrition labels. They advise avoiding food items with sodium levels greater than 20 percent and maintaining the recommended daily sodium allowance of 2,400 milligrams. Health officials also suggest using natural herbs like curry or pepper instead of salt and soy sauce.
Brooklyn officials plan to track blood pressure levels in the borough as the campaign continues. They hope to see the rates lower as they attempt to increase awareness of the issue.
