There are millions of people in the country of West Indian descent, but many feel invisible since there is no such category on the U.S. census.
Many residents feel Brooklyn is the bedrock of Caribbean culture. For this reason, some are launching a movement in the borough to change the U.S. census to include a West Indian/Caribbean category.
Those of West Indian descent say they must routinely pick another nationality on the census. Some in Brooklyn feel they aren?t respected for what they bring to the borough and the U.S.
Supporters of the movement, called CARIB ID 2010, are lobbying for a bill that would create a non-Hispanic Caribbean/West Indian category on the census. Members of the group say they have contacted Rep. Yvette Clarke to help them with their cause.
