Borough President Eric Adams has recommended that changes be made within city agencies after a man was shot and killed by an NYPD officer Thursday night.
Police say 28-year-old Akai Gurley was accidentally shot in the chest in a dimly lit stairwell of the Pink Houses by rookie Officer Peter Liang. Gurley was later pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
Adams says the tragic incident should be a teaching moment for both the NYPD and the New York City Housing Authority. He says NYCHA should implement an immediate 24-hour repair policy to fix things such as lights.
Adams also recommends that rookie NYPD officers should be accompanied by a seasoned officer for their first six months on patrol to attain a better understanding of firearm control.
In response to the shooting, NYCHA has said, "As Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton have stated, this is a tragic accident in which a life was lost. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes. NYCHA will continue to work with the NYPD and our residents to make our properties as safe as possible."
