A special group of people were recognized by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams as part of the 'Heroes of the Month' event Tuesday.
Over the months of October, November, and December—the people recognized Tuesday have gone out of their way to help others. They include three NYPD officers and two nonprofits.
In Oct. two officers from the NYPD's 61st Precinct were off duty and saved a man's life in Staten Island who was suffering a heart attack at a bowling alley.
In November, another NYPD officer helped a woman who made comments that she might harm herself and her child. The officer was able to track down the woman and her 6-month-old child and make sure they were safe.
"Really it's been a whirlwind for me, I'm just an officer, I'm just doing my job," said Michelle Schack, an NYPD officer.
December was shared by two heroes. The head of Fight Back Bay Ridge was recognized for organizing a rally in response to seeing hateful messages around the community. The second hero recognized was the managing director at the Met Council, which donated 10,000 pounds of kosher food to Jersey City following the horrific anti-Semitic shooting.
A common theme from all the recipients at the event is that they were simply doing what they do every day—but they say it's still incredible to be honored.
