Two Brooklyn congressmen are demanding a congressional hearing on the sale of Starrett City, citing concerns the plan may uproot and out price thousands of residents.Congressmen Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Edolphus Towns (D-NY) are asking for a congressional hearing to delve into the specifics of the deal. Starrett City?s new owners, Clipper Equities, bought the buildings for $1.3 billion. They insist they are planning to keep rents low, but officials and residents are skeptical. Starrett City houses 12,000 people, many of whom say they are dependent on affordable housing.Starrett City was originally part of the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program which was designed to give thousands of city residents a shot at affordable housing. Residents are planning an upcoming rally to focus attention on their concerns.
