Bushwick tenants at a Starr Street building have formed a tenant union to address long-standing grievances with their landlord, Jacob Sacks.

The tenants allege ongoing unaddressed issues, including pest infestations and unresolved violations, have compromised their quality of life.

Sacks responded this week to News 12's inquiries, stating that he plans to sue tenant Hunter Boone for defamation.

Boone, who leads the newly formed Starr Street Union, said, "This is the first time I'm hearing this. I was prepared for this...but it’s retaliation at this point." Boone has collaborated with News 12 in multiple reports highlighting tenant concerns.

According to a spokesperson from the Housing Preservation and Development agency, city inspectors recently determined that Sacks falsely certified repairs for several outstanding violations.

In response to the accusation, Sacks said, "I think it is inappropriate to say I have been accused of something when I haven't been provided any information," adding that he would follow up with HPD directly.

The city’s Department of Health also recently inspected the building, identifying pest issues that must be addressed within two weeks. Sacks stated that his team is on track to complete most of this work by the end of the week.

Boone and Sacks are expected to meet in court this week regarding Boone’s decision to withhold rent, which Boone says is necessary to pressure for improved conditions.
