The city is again facing opposition over a plan to reopen a Boerum Hill jail to alleviate Rikers Island overcrowding.
The Department of Corrections also wants to increase the number of inmates the Brooklyn House of Detention accommodates from 749 to 1,479. Corrections officials say putting inmates closer to their families and attorneys will help them re-enter society.
Community groups argue the neighborhood has experienced a revival since the jail closed in 2003. However, resident Marc Saccone feels some people want to keep the jail out of the area for financial gain. "Probably my landlord will be against that opening because he wants to jack up the price of his house like everybody else," said Saccone.
