One construction worker is dead and another hospitalized Friday after an accident on the corner of Hughes Avenue and East 182nd Street.
Both men were struck in the back of the head with a backhoe and fell into a hole between 3 and 5 feet deep. The men were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where one of them died. The other injured worker remains in critical condition.
Sources at the scene say the workers may have been unlicensed to use equipment or be at the site. News 12 The Bronx attempted to contact the company overseeing the project, but were unable to get a statement.
Police tested two additional workers for alcohol levels and later escorted them from the scene. It is unclear whether they face any charges.
