The mayor?s plan to sell closed Brooklyn and city firehouses has critics fired up over safety post-September 11th.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-New York) wants to sell five locations, including one in Williamsburg and one in Cobble Hill that closed about three years ago in a restructuring. The properties are expected to go for up to $2 million each to developers. The issue of whether the sales can progress will first go before the Department of City Planning, then the City Council in February.
Some FDNY members, councilors and advocates are against the plan. They argue fire response times have increased since the closings, putting lives at risk. Many say the FDNY should be shoring up its ranks and resources due to the constant threat of terrorism and other dangers.
