School nights are a busy time at the Salvation Army community center in Brownsville, where after-school programs are filled with kids.
The programs are funded from donations placed into the organization's red kettles, which can usually be found accompanied by bell ringers outside stores during the holiday season. In Brownsville, most of the money goes to the community center, which is frequented daily by about 130 youths ranging from children to teens.
Donations help offset costs incurred by the community center and cover operational fees such as heating and electricity.
Organizers say the center is a place for kids to be off the streets and keep their minds engaged.
They also say the programs are not just for kids. There is a night program for young adults who wish to continue their education.
