A Bedford Park church is stepping up its crusade against drugs after the pastor said someone sold drugs during Saturday Mass.
Msgr. John Jenik, of Our Lady of Refuge Church, said an usher chased out three men after seeing them exchange drugs for money. Jenik said he didn't call police because they have been unresponsive in the past.
In 1986, the church nailed up 14 crosses that read "Drugs Crucify" throughout the drug- and crime-plagued neighborhood. While parishioners said they aren't shocked over the continued crime, they were disgusted by the church drug deal.
"That's the only safe place we have," said Cristal Caban. "If that's going on in the church, that's it. There's nothing left for us."
